Granite countertops are made from purely natural stone sourced from quarries and cut into thin slabs and polished. Quartz countertops are manmade and although they may include a large percentage of natural quartz, they may also contain additional minerals. The slabs are formed into slabs instead of sourced from a quarry.
All natural granite countertops are unique in color and mineral pattern. Because quartz countertops are engineered, they are more uniform even though many unique colors and patterns may be available.
Granite is moderately porous and must be sealed when installed and periodically over the lifetime of the countertop. It is also prone to flaws that could lead to cracks. Quartz is fabricated with resins, reducing the risk of cracking and eliminating the need for sealing. In addition, some reports state that quartz is less likely to harbor bacteria due to the less porous surface.
