Getting ready for template and install day

What to have ready for templating, how we measure, and what to expect on install day.

Get ready for templating

Templating is where your countertop takes its final shape. A little preparation keeps it to one visit and avoids changes after cutting. Before the template tech arrives, clear everything off the existing countertops so the measurements are accurate.

Have cabinets set and level

Cabinets must be installed, structurally sound, plumb, level within 1/8 inch over 10 feet, and secured to the wall and/or floor. We template to what is there; if cabinets move later, the tops will not fit.

Have fixtures on site

If you are supplying the sink, have it on site; if we supply it, we bring it at install. An undermount farmhouse or apron sink must be installed before template. The cooktop or range, faucet and soap dispenser should be on site too. We cut openings from the manufacturer specs.

Decide seams and overhangs

We will show where seams fall on your slab and confirm overhangs for seating. Someone who can decide should be at the visit, to go over the color, edge, sink and measurements with the tech.

How we measure

We record every wall, corner and cabinet edge digitally and lay out the pieces on your slabs before cutting. You approve the layout first.

Install day

  • We call to confirm the install date and time. Installs usually take 3–4 hours and are done in one day. Large or multi-area jobs can take longer.
  • Clear the driveway so our van can get close, and clear the walkways, stairs and halls into the house.
  • Do not book other trades for the same day. Plumbing, electrical and tile come after the countertop install, and our crew does not do electrical or plumbing work.
  • Cover floors if you like. Our crew uses drop sheets but does not remove shoes.
