Overhangs, seams & support

Planning how the stone sits

Stone is strong but heavy. How far it reaches past the cabinets, where pieces join and what holds them up are decided before we cut.

Overhangs for seating

Bar and island seating needs room for knees. Longer overhangs need brackets or steel supports, which we specify at templating.

A natural stone overhang past 12 inches needs corbels or steel supports every 30 inches.

Where seams go

Most kitchens need at least one seam. Slabs are big, but long runs, L-shapes and curves usually need a joint. We show seam locations on the layout before cutting.

Support and brackets

Hidden steel supports, corbels and legs each suit different overhangs. We tell you what your layout needs.

We place seams where the pattern hides them and the cabinets carry them.

Heavy islands

Waterfall ends and thick mitered edges add weight; the floor and cabinets must carry it.

Frequently asked questions

It depends on the material and thickness. We confirm the limit for your slab at templating. For natural stone, overhangs over 12 inches need corbels or steel supports every 30 inches.

Most kitchens need at least one seam. Slabs are big, but long runs, L-shapes and curves usually need a joint. Seams are visible up close. We match the pattern, keep them tight, and plan where they go with you before we cut.

If the island fits on one slab, yes. Larger islands need a seam or a larger slab.
